BRUSSELS — Police have detained 132 individuals who took half in an unlawful celebration in a Brussels park to protest COVID-19 restrictions, authorities stated Sunday.
About 15 folks, together with protesters and police, have been injured in clashes, police spokeswoman Ilse Van de Keere stated.
About 2,000 revelers and protesters had massed within the park Saturday for the second time in a month, and police used water cannons and tear gasoline to disperse them.
Scattered round, police and protesters clashed till deep within the night. The federal government and police had warned folks for every week to steer clear of the celebration to no avail. Clashes erupted after large crowds began gathering late within the afternoon.
Some protesters gathered round a bonfire shouting “Freedom!” and “The place is the celebration? Right here is the celebration!” Some pelted the police with objects.
Belgium nonetheless has strict guidelines banning main gatherings and insists on folks carrying face masks in massive crowds.
